Mac Bone X Snow Leopard (version 10.six) is the seventh major release of macOS, Apple tree's desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers.

Snow Leopard was publicly unveiled on June 8, 2009 at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference. On August 28, 2009, information technology was released worldwide, [2] and was fabricated bachelor for purchase from Apple's website and retail stores at the cost of Usa$29 for a single-user license. As a outcome of the low cost, initial sales of Snow Leopard were significantly higher than that of its predecessors whose price started at U.s.$129. [ten] The release of Snow Leopard came nearly ii years after the launch of Mac OS X Leopard, the 2d longest fourth dimension span between successive Mac OS X releases (the fourth dimension span between Tiger and Leopard was the longest).

Unlike previous versions of Mac Bone X, the goals of Snow Leopard were improved performance, greater efficiency and the reduction of its overall retention footprint. Apple famously marketed Snow Leopard equally having "zero new features". [eleven] Its name signified its goal to be a refinement of the previous Os Ten version, Leopard. [12] Much of the software in Mac Os 10 was extensively rewritten for this release in order to take full advantage of modernistic Macintosh hardware and software technologies (64-flake, Cocoa, etc.). New programming frameworks, such as OpenCL, were created, allowing software developers to use graphics cards in their applications. It was too the first Mac OS release since Arrangement 7.1.1 to not support Macs using PowerPC processors, as Apple tree dropped support for them and focused on Intel-based products. [2] As back up for Rosetta was dropped in Mac OS X Lion, Snow Leopard is the final version of Mac Os Ten that is able to run PowerPC-simply applications.

Though the final release but supports Intel processors, two evolution builds that supported PowerPC processors are known to exist, builds 10A96 and 10A190. [xiii] [fourteen] [fifteen]

Snow Leopard was succeeded by OS X Lion (version ten.7) on July 20, 2011. [sixteen] For several years, Apple tree connected to sell Snow Leopard at its online shop for the benefit of users that required Snowfall Leopard in order to upgrade to later versions of OS X. Snow Leopard was the concluding version of Mac Os 10 to exist distributed primarily through optical disc, as all farther releases were mainly distributed through the Mac App Shop introduced in the Snow Leopard ten.half dozen.half-dozen update. [17]

Snow Leopard was the last release of Mac Os X to support the 32-flake Intel Core Solo and Intel Cadre Duo CPUs. Because of this, Snow Leopard still remained somewhat popular alongside OS X Lion, despite its lack of continued support, [18] more often than not because of its ability to run PowerPC-based applications.[ citation needed ]

Snow Leopard was also the last release of Mac Bone X to ship with a welcome video at first boot later on installation. [19] Reception of Snowfall Leopard was positive.

Arrangement requirements [ edit ]

Apple states the post-obit bones Snow Leopard system requirements are:

  • Mac computer with an Intel processor (IA-32). "Yonah" processors such equally Core Solo and Cadre Duo can run simply 32-fleck applications; later on x86-64 architecture processors such as Core 2 Duo, Core i5 and i7 are likewise able to run 64-chip applications.
  • i GB of RAM
  • 5 GB of free deejay space
  • DVD drive (besides attainable via Remote Disc) or external USB or FireWire DVD drive for installation

Boosted requirements to use certain features: [20]

Snowfall Leopard releases practice not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.yard., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), all eMacs, plus pre-February 2006 Mac minis and the Ability Mac G4 Cube), although PowerPC applications are supported via Rosetta, which is at present an optional install. In 2020, two developer previews of Snow Leopard that are universal appeared on the Cyberspace that tin be booted on select G4 and G5 Power Macs with modification and patching. [21]

License [ edit ]

Snowfall Leopard is available equally an upgrade for Intel-based Macintosh computers. Single-user licenses and "family pack" licenses for up to five computers are available. For qualifying Mac computers bought after June viii, 2009, Apple offered a discounted price through its "upwardly-to-appointment" plan, provided that customers' orders were faxed or postmarked past Dec 26, 2009. The standalone retail version of Snow Leopard is marketed as being restricted to users of Mac Os X Leopard, while the recommended upgrade path from Apple for Mac OS X Tiger is through the "Mac Box Set", which includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard and the current versions of iLife and iWork.

There are 3 licenses available. [22] These licenses differ in their requirements for pre-installed versions of Mac OS X:

  • Leopard Upgrade: requires that Mac OS X Leopard already be installed.

If you take purchased an Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard license, and then subject to the terms and weather of this License, y'all are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, utilise and run i (one) copy of the Apple tree Software on a single Apple-branded reckoner equally long as that figurer has a properly licensed copy of Mac OS X Leopard already installed on it. [23]

A "Family Pack Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard" license is also mentioned as a subset of the Leopard Upgrade.
  • Single Apply: places no restriction on which (if any) version of Mac OS X should already be installed. Used for the not-upgrade and Mac Box Ready versions of Snow Leopard.

Bailiwick to the terms and atmospheric condition of this License ... yous are granted a limited non-sectional license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple tree Software on a single Apple-branded computer at a time. [23]

  • Family Pack: identical to the Single Use license in this respect.

It is not entirely clear which license is offered with the retail version of Snow Leopard. As noted above, Apple tree'southward website advertised this version equally an "upgrade from Mac OS Ten Leopard for $29" and suggest that others upgrade using the Mac Box Set, implying the stand-alone retail version to be a "Leopard Upgrade" license. On the other hand, some Apple printing materials appear to betoken that this version is, in fact, the "Single Use" license:

The Snow Leopard unmarried user license will be available for a suggested retail price of $29 (US) [24] (accent added)

However, fifty-fifty if the retail edition of Snow Leopard is in fact a "Leopard Upgrade", the company has acknowledged that in that location is no technical barrier in that edition preventing a straight upgrade from Mac Bone Ten "Tiger". [25]

The Leopard Upgrade license explicitly applies to the Up-To-Date Program [26] (US$9.95) for Macs bought between June 8 and December 26, 2009 [27] and the installation discs provided through this programme are clearly marked as upgrades unlike either of the retail editions.

New or changed features [ edit ]

Mac OS 10 Snow Leopard is intended to be a release aimed to refine the existing feature set, aggrandize the technological capabilities of the operating system, and improve awarding efficiency. Many of the changes involve how the system works in the groundwork and are not intended to be seen by the user. For example, the Finder awarding was completely rewritten in the Cocoa awarding programming interface. Despite meaning changes in the software, users will feel most no changes in the user interface. Snow Leopard includes the following changes:

  • Mac App Shop – An app market place built in the image of the iOS App Store. Released in version x.6.6. [28]
  • Kick Camp at present allows Windows partitions to read and copy files from HFS+ partitions. The new version as well adds support for advanced features on Movie theater Displays and a new control-line version of the Startup Disk Control Panel.
  • The Finder has been completely rewritten in Cocoa to take reward of the new technologies introduced in Snow Leopard.
  • A much smaller OS footprint, taking upward well-nigh 7 GB less infinite than Mac Os X Leopard. Some of the recovered disk infinite (~250 MB) is considering printer drivers are at present downloaded or installed but equally needed, rather than existence pre-installed. The default install simply contains those drivers needed for existing printers and a pocket-size subset of popular printers. [29]
  • iChat enhancements include greater resolution video chats in iChat Theater and lowered upload bandwidth requirements.
  • Microsoft Exchange back up is now integrated into the Mail, Accost Book, and iCal applications. However, simply Microsoft Substitution 2007 is supported and customers using prior versions of Commutation must either upgrade or utilise Microsoft Entourage.
  • Full multi-bear upon trackpad support has been added to notebooks prior to those introduced in October 2008. [xxx] While the original MacBook Air and other early multi-touch trackpad enabled notebooks had support for some gestures, they were unable to use four-finger gestures. This limitation has now been removed in Snowfall Leopard.
  • Preview tin can infer the structure of a paragraph in a PDF document.
  • QuickTime X (version 10), the next release of QuickTime role player and multimedia framework, has been completely rewritten into a full 64-bit Cocoa application and builds on the media technologies in Mac OS Ten, such as Core Audio, Core Video, and Core Animation, to deliver playback. Apple has redesigned the QuickTime user interface to resemble the full-screen QuickTime view in prior versions, where the entire window displays the video. The titlebar and playback controls fade in and out as needed. QuickTime X as well supports HTTP alive streaming and takes reward of ColorSync to provide high-quality color reproduction. [31] If Snow Leopard is installed on a Mac with an nVidia GeForce 9400M, 320M or GT 330M graphics card, QuickTime 10 will be able to utilise its video-decoding capabilities to reduce CPU load.
  • Safari 4 features Top Sites, Cover Flow, VoiceOver, expanded standards support, and congenital-in crash resistance, which prevents browser crashes caused past plug-ins by running them in separate processes. [32] Safari 4 is bundled with Snow Leopard but does not crave it, equally it is available for gratis for Mac Os Ten Tiger and Leopard too as Windows.
  • Time Machine connection establishment and backups are now much faster.
  • VoiceOver has also been profoundly enhanced in Snow Leopard. Reading of web pages is improved with Machine Web Spots — areas of a page automatically designated for quick access. On newer Apple tree portables, trackpad gestures tin be used to control VoiceOver functions, including the "rotor" gesture first seen in VoiceOver for the iPhone 3GS, allowing for the changing of certain VoiceOver navigation options by rotating fingers on the trackpad. Braille Display back up is also improved, with Bluetooth displays supported for the first time. [33]

Refinements to the user interface [ edit ]

While the Finder was completely rewritten in Cocoa, it did not receive a major user interface overhaul. Instead, the interface has been modified in several areas to promote ease of use. These changes include:

  • The "traffic light" titlebar controls are now slightly lighter in appearance and have less depth than they did in Mac Os 10 10.five.
  • Exposé can at present display windows for a unmarried program by left clicking and property its icon in the dock. Windows are arranged in a new filigree blueprint.
  • Contextual menus which come out of Dock icons now accept more options and have a new look, with a semi-transparent charcoal background and white text.
  • An option has been added to the Finder preferences that allows the user to modify search behavior. The default setting tin exist selected to (i) search the unabridged reckoner, (2) search just the electric current folder from which the search was initiated, or (three) perform the search based on the previously used scope.
  • Dock Stacks, when viewed as a grid, permit viewing of a subfolder as a new stack, rather than launching a Finder window, in a mode similar to "tunnelling". When viewed as grids or lists, scroll-bars are provided to navigate folders with more items than the current screen resolution volition accommodate, every bit the program does not scale the icons to evidence every bit many as possible the manner it did in Os X 10.5. [34]
  • The default gamma has been inverse from 1.8 to 2.ii to meliorate serve the color needs of digital content producers and consumers. [29]
  • Windows tin now exist minimized directly onto their application's icon in the dock. [35]
  • Faster PDF and JPEG icon refreshes. [36]
  • When searching for a network, the AirPort menu-bar icon animates until it finds a network and shows network strength of available networks in the drop downwardly menu.
  • Prefixes for bytes are now used in strictly decimal meaning (as opposed to their binary meaning) when describing disk space, such that an indicated file size of 1 MB corresponds to ane million bytes, as commonly used past hard disk manufacturers. [37]
  • Snow Leopard shuts down and goes to slumber faster. [38]

New wallpapers [ edit ]

Every bit with about upgrades of Mac Os X, new wallpapers are available. There are new wallpapers in the Nature (two of which are of snow leopards), Plants and Black and White sub-folders under the Apple tree folder. Furthermore, there are new Apple wallpaper sub-folders with multiple wallpapers:

New solid colors can be used as wallpapers likewise. There is a new blue and gray, as well as a solid kelp which serves every bit the "light-green wallpaper." The default "space nebula" wallpaper has been updated every bit well.

Dropped features [ edit ]

  • AppleTalk is no longer supported. [39]
  • It is no longer possible to change an application'due south language using the Finder'due south "Get Info" dialogue. While there are workarounds for some applications, others (such equally Adobe After Effects CS4) will not be able to exist run in a different language than the ane selected in the arrangement [xl] without using Terminal commands or 3rd-party software. The option to change linguistic communication for individual apps was added back in macOS Catalina in 2019. [41]
  • Creator codes, which are per-file metadata attributes that define, for a file that has a creator code, what application should open up that file, regardless of its extension, have had their priority in the application selection process reduced. [42]
  • Creating or updating Hierarchical File System (HFS Plus predecessor) volumes is no longer supported.

Developer technologies [ edit ]

64-bit architecture [ edit ]

Mac OS 10 Tiger added limited support for 64-bit applications on machines with 64-flake processors; Leopard extended the support for 64-bit applications to include applications using nigh of Mac Bone X'southward libraries and frameworks.

In Snow Leopard, nigh built-in applications accept been rebuilt to use the 64-bit x86-64 compages (excluding iTunes, Front Row, Grapher and DVD Player applications). [43] They will run in 32-bit mode on machines with 32-bit processors, and in 64-chip style on machines with 64-flake processors.

In improver, the Mac Os Ten kernel has been rebuilt to run in 64-bit mode on some machines. On those machines, Snow Leopard supports upward to 16 terabytes of RAM. Newer Xserve and Mac Pro machines will run a 64-bit kernel past default; newer iMac and MacBook Pro machines tin can run a 64-flake kernel, merely volition not do so past default. [44] Users wishing to use the 64-bit kernel on those machines must concur down the numbers 6 and 4 on the keyboard while booting to get the 64-bit kernel to load. [45] [46] A change to the com.apple.Kicking.plist volition likewise enable users with compatible computers to permanently boot into 64-bit for those wishing to do so.

Stuart Harris, software product marketing manager at Apple Australia, said, "For the most role, everything that they experience on the Mac, from the 64-bit point of view, the applications, the operating system, is all going to be 64-bit, but that at this stage in that location were very few things, such as device drivers, that required 64-flake mode at the kernel level". [46]

With Mac Bone Ten Snow Leopard simply the post-obit Apple computers run or are capable of running the 64-bit kernel: [47]

Product Model identifier K64 condition on customer version K64 condition on server version
Xserve early 2008 and later Xserve2,1 and college Capable Default
Mac Pro early 2008 MacPro3,1
Mac Pro early 2009 MacPro4,1

iMac early 2006 and later[ citation needed ] iMac4,1 and higher Capable Capable
Mac Mini mid-2010 Macmini4,one Default

^* Amit Singh has reported that the early 2009 Mac Mini and MacBook may be capable of running the 64-fleck kernel; however, Apple has set these models to boot into the 32-flake kernel. With some tweaking, the Unibody MacBook can be set to boot the 64-bit kernel. [48]

One thousand Primal Dispatch [ edit ]

K Central Acceleration (GCD) uses the multiple processor cores now in every new Macintosh for more efficient performance. Due to the complexity of multithreaded programming and technical difficulties traditionally involved in making applications optimized for multicore CPUs, the majority of reckoner applications do not effectively use multiple processor cores. [49] Every bit a result, boosted processing power, compared to single-core machines, ofttimes goes unused. K Central Dispatch includes APIs to help programmers efficiently use these cores for parallel programming.

Grand Central Dispatch abstracts the notion of threads away, and instead provides developers with the concept of queues—lists of jobs (blocks of code) that demand to be executed. GCD takes the responsibleness of distributing the jobs amidst actual threads and cores, and clearing up unused retentivity created by inactive or old threads to achieve maximum performance. Apple is too releasing APIs for Grand Key Dispatch for developers to use in their applications and too to analyze specific blocks of code running on One thousand Central Dispatch. [50]

A new C and Objective-C language characteristic named "Blocks" facilitates creation of code that will hands optimize to accept reward of Grand Cardinal Acceleration. [51] [52] [53]

OpenCL [ edit ]

OpenCL (Open up Computing Linguistic communication) addresses the power of graphics processing units (GPUs) to leverage them in whatever awarding, and not just for graphics-intensive applications like 3D games. OpenCL automatically optimizes for the kind of graphics processor in the Mac, adjusting itself to the bachelor processing power. OpenCL provides consistent numeric precision and accuracy, fixing a problem that has hampered GPU-based programming in the past. [54]

OpenCL includes a C-based programming language with a structure that is already familiar to Mac OS 10 programmers, who can use Xcode programmer tools to adapt their programs to work with OpenCL. Just the most procedure intensive parts of the application need to be written in OpenCL C without affecting the rest of the code. OpenCL is an open standard that has been supported by AMD, Intel, and Nvidia; it is maintained past Khronos Group. [31]

It serves a like purpose to Nvidia's C for CUDA and Microsoft's Direct3D 11 compute shaders.

It only works with the following Mac GPUs: NVIDIA GeForce 320M, GT 330M, 9400M, 9600M GT, 8600M GT, GT 120, GT 130, GTX 285, 8800 GT, 8800 GS, Quadro FX 4800, FX 5600 and ATI Radeon Hd 4670, Hard disk 4850, Hd 4870, HD 5670, HD 5750, Hd 5770, HD 5870, HD 6490M, HD 6750M, HD 6770M, Hard disk drive 6970M. [20] If the system does not possess ane of these compatible GPUs, OpenCL code will instead execute on the system's CPU. [55]

CUPS [ edit ]

CUPS (the printing system used in many Unix-like operating systems) has been updated to version 1.4 which provides improved driver, networking, and Kerberos support along with functioning improvements. CUPS 1.4 is likewise the first implementation of the Internet Printing Protocol version ii.ane. [56]

Power management [ edit ]

Power management has been improved, with implementation of a new wake on need feature supported on more recent Macintosh hardware. [57] Wake on demand takes reward of the sleep proxy service implemented in Aerodrome and Time Capsule routers, [58] and so that the computer can slumber while the router responds to mDNS queries. Should the request require the host reckoner to wake upwards, the router sends the necessary special wake-upward-package [59] to the sleeping computer.

Security [ edit ]

Apple strengthened Mac OS X by implementing stack protection, and sandboxing more than Mac Bone X components such as the H.264 decoder in QuickTime and browser plug-ins as a separate procedure in Safari. [threescore] Secure virtual retentivity was an option in earlier releases on Snow Leopard, but the checkbox to disable it was removed subsequently. An anti-malware feature was too added to the system that alerts the user if malware is detected. [61] Mac Os Ten ten.half-dozen.viii added regular malware definition updates. [62]

Estimator security researcher Charlie Miller claims that Bone Ten Snow Leopard is more than vulnerable to assail than Microsoft Windows for lacking full accost space layout randomization (ASLR) since Mac OS 10 Leopard, [63] a technology that Microsoft started implementing in Windows Vista. [64]

The Safari web browser has received updates to version six.0 in Lion and Mountain King of beasts, but not in Snow Leopard. [65]

Compatibility [ edit ]

Snow Leopard breaks compatibility with several older versions of some applications, such every bit Parallels Desktop iii.0, versions of Discontinuity before 2.one.1, and versions of Keynote before two.0.2, amongst other software. [66] Apple has also published a list of applications with known compatibility problems with Snow Leopard. [67]

Printer and scanner drivers used by previous versions of Mac OS X are not compatible with Snow Leopard and will be replaced during Snowfall Leopard installation. Since the initial release of Snowfall Leopard many manufacturers have provided compatible drivers that are available via Software Update. [68] If a native driver is not bachelor Snowfall Leopard also includes CUPS and Gutenprint open source drivers that may provide limited functionality.

x.6.0 introduced a bug that frequently prevented DNS queries from returning IPv6 addresses. [69] [seventy] [71] This was resolved in x.vi.8. [72]

Reception [ edit ]

At the WWDC in 2009, Apple tree stated that Snow Leopard features no new major visual changes. [73] Instead, the release focuses on refining the operating organization to enable improve functioning. [73]

OSNews reported that Mac OS X Snow Leopard was well received by critics. [74] [75]

Engadget reviewed Snow Leopard and pointed out that the price of Snowfall Leopard dropped from the $129 Apple charged for previous versions of Mac OS Ten to $29. Engadget'due south opinion was that this could be largely considering most users would not see a noticeable change in the look and feel of the system. [76] However, most reviews commented on the large improvement in speed of the native Mac OS X applications Finder, iCal, Mail, etc. [76]

CNET editors gave information technology 4 stars out of five, stating "Intel Mac users will like Snow Leopard'south smartly designed interface enhancements, and its Exchange support is a must-have (specially with Outlook for Mac on the style). With a ton of technological improvements, Snow Leopard is worth the $29 upgrade fee." [77]

On October 21, 2009, SFGate blogger Yobie Benjamin wrote that the "MacBook Pro that came preloaded with Snowfall Leopard kicks butt and is a screaming fast car", only "when I tried to upgrade one of my 'older' MacBooks, it was a fricking disaster from hell". Apart from upgrading, Benjamin also tried a clean install. Just he complained of slowness even afterward his clean install. He wrote, "I ended up downgrading back to OSX 10.5.eight" then he concluded by writing, "I might try to do it again but information technology won't be till Apple releases at least two major fix updates. If y'all desire to gyre the dice and try, go alee... your upgrade might piece of work, withal, random installs not working is not good for me. Lesson learned --- I'll wait." [78]

The single-user upgrade and Family unit Pack units of Snow Leopard ranked i and 2 respectively on Amazon.com'due south software bestseller charts when Apple appear it would release it within the week. [79]

Testmac.com highlighted other unexpected improvements including the release of a new version of Boot Camp, version three.0, a cleaner, popup software update process and screen and video recording in the new QuickTime Player. [lxxx]

The BBC reported that a issues in Mac Bone X versions 10.vi.0 and 10.half dozen.one which, in rare cases, caused loss of user account information after use of a previously existing guest account by users who had upgraded from a previous version of Mac OS X, received wide publicity. [81] The issues was fixed every bit of version 10.6.2. [82]

Release history [ edit ]

Quondam Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced Snow Leopard at WWDC on June 9, 2008, [83] and information technology was privately demonstrated to developers by Senior Vice President of Software Technology Bertrand Serlet. On Monday, May 11, 2009, after build 10A354, Apple issued a code freeze on Snowfall Leopard'southward APIs. [84] The showtime public demonstration was given at WWDC 2009 past Serlet and Vice President of Mac Os Engineering, Craig Federighi. [83] [85]
